For 2 years I lived in the New York City suburbs, specifically Rye, NY, in Westchester County.

To say the area is affluent is an understatement. I could tell you stories that you would deny as pure fiction, but are the gospel truth. Just read “Squeaking By On $300,000” and you’ll get some idea of what I lived next to for 2 years.

And believe me, that article doesn’t even begin to cover life (of others, not me) in Rye.

I lived in a very nice 1 bedroom apartment (700 sq ft, enormous by NY standards, and a “steal” at $1700 a month) and once had the owner of a shop in town refer to my complex as “the projects” when I gave her my address.

I still read the local paper (The Rye Record) if only for the entertaining police blotter. I mean, c’mon, you got to love a town where police are called after a “[r]eport of someone shooting rabbits with slingshot near the Friends Meeting House on Milton Road. Port Chester man admitted doing same, and produced slingshot from his knapsack. Dead rabbit found. Offender summonsed for “Varying Hare out of Season”.”
